Nancy Williard’s article on Web2.0 approach to Internet safety enlightens the reader of specific precaution’s and potential solutions to the technological demand in our schools.

I agree with her point about how schools shouldn’t focus on filtering because there is always a way to break the filter. As a certified educator, I find it aggravating that I can’t access needed information during my prep period at work.

In our school, we discuss Internet safety and have each student have a parent or guardian sign a waiver to use the Internet. I feel that most students are accessible to using technology at a younger age, it is crucial for elementary teachers to continue to thoroughly discuss Internet safety.

At the Middle School level, it is understood that the Internet should only be for educational purposes only. We have clear expectations and inappropriate use that is specified in their agreement will not be tolerated. The students generally follow the guidelines because the computers are in the library and clustered together so it is easy to monitor what they are viewing. When laptops become accessible to every student, the temptation to use social networking sites during class time will exist. It is our job as educators to monitor that. I feel that just as we have workshops on drug and alcohol abuse, each building should have adolescent risk social networking workshop.

WHY did you select these tools for the specific assignments?
Voicethread is a web2.0 tool that allows you to upload your images and create a media album. Information is presented by commenting with a web cam, microphone or simple text onto the pictures in the form of a slideshow. Kyolo is a web2.0 tool that allows you to upload your images and add textual information to that image in the form of a bubble (as seen in cartoons). Mixbook is a web2.0 tool that allows you to upload your images and create a digital photo book.

The goal was to create a final product that assessed different learning styles using web2.0 tools. I specifically chose these tools because they were relatively easy to use and similar in what they did. Each tool adds a different element that the other tool doesn’t. For instance, all three tools require student sto upload images. What I am assessing is how they descriptively communicate what they learned. Kyolo, for lower level students require only a few words of description. Mixbook for mid-level students require complete written sentences and Voicethread for advanced level students require complete written and verbal sentences.

What are some of the challenges you might expect in terms of having your students use each of these tools?
In a perfect world, all students would have a digital camera and a computer to upload their images. Therefore, the bulk of the project needs to be done in class in our computer lab.

I have not had experience with using these tools and I did not have a problem figuring them out. The problem here is the content. Most of the content associated in this museum is geared towards high school students, not Middle School.
