A. Response to Web 2.0 Safety Article
Since the internet is fairly new in schools, educators cannot completely control internet use and cannot predict everything that will happen. With experience and education, teachers are becoming savvy to students’ actions and can get a sense if something is not right. Since I did not grow up with the internet, most of my high school students know more than I do. If I have a question about how to do something, I ask them and they usually know what to do. Although we have a filtering system, the students know how to bypass it. They find a hosting website that is not filtered by the school and usually go to a social networking site (Facebook). I monitor all of my students’ activities and they know they are not allowed to go on Facebook when they are in my class. Sometimes I make an exception if they need to communicate about a homework assignment or something that is school related. These sites are not all bad because students are using these sites to communicate about school work and work on projects.
I agree that schools cannot completely control students’ activities. It is up to the teachers and administrators to educate themselves about the internet. One of the ways to educate ourselves is to talk to the kids and let them talk to us about what is going on. If students have a good rapport with the teachers, students will teach them. It is up to the teacher to make the students understand what is and what is not appropriate in school.

Going to the Bronx Zoo will enrich the third grade curriculum. Students will appreciate seeing all of the animals in their simulated environments that students had previously studied in school. Parents will be invited to accompany their children at the zoo.
Our visit to the Bronx Zoo will incorporate Technology, Science, Math, and ESL Standards.

This week I explored:
Toondoo
Panaramio
Googlemaps
Gabcast
Scrapblog
Voicethread
For my assignments I chose Gabcast, Scrapblog, and Voicethread because they were tools that were the easiest to use and they provided a good way to assess student learning.
WHY did you select these tools for the specific assignments?
I chose Gabcast to record information at the zoo.
I chose Scrapblog and Voicethread as assessment tools for students to present what they learned to the class.
What are some of the challenges you might expect in terms of having your students use each of these tools?
I had trouble with Gabcast because there were many areas in the zoo that did not have phone service. Students might find this aspect frustrating.
I started out using Toondoo but when I published the work, I found the pictures were not clear and the work looked sloppy.
I fell in love with Scrapblog because you could really be creative with making your own pages, it was easy to use, and the outcome came out neat and clear.
I've used Voicethread before, but not to this extent. I had fun writing and telling my story about the zoo. Students have to know that the order in which they write or talk, is the order in which it will be presented. You also just can't delete a slide. If you want to delete something that was already saved, you must delete the entire Voicethread and start from scratch.
